Isn't the ecotec a Chevy motor thats in the '02 and newer Cavaliers and the new Cobalt?![]()
The Ecotec is GM's small car motor. Sees action in the Cav, a couple of Saturns I think, Opel overseas, etc. It's a busy small car motor, but this belongs in GM

no, the ecotec isn't like vtec...just a name for the engine, no solenoids in the valvetrain here...
great engine though, a lot of people I know compare it to the mitsu 4g63 in regard to strength and reliability...
here's a link one of my guys found with a pretty decent breakdown:

if you'd like to tear into one, i have 2 shortblocks in my garage that im probably getting rid of soon. both were run low on oil (rental car motors) and have snapped rods. i am parting the good parts off of them and getting rid of the blocks (one is cracked).
found out some interesting info as far as how bad damage can be on hydrolocked blocks...
in short, if a rod is bent, and it forces the skirt into the sleeve, it will puncture it and rupture the coolant jacket inside. What really sucks is that they're iron sleeves, so they cannot be popped out and replaced as I originally though, so basically you have to find someone who cnan do iron sleeves (good luck nowadays) or you have a new boat anchor...
I'm in the process of tearing down a few though looking for a good block...I really like the 3 piece design though, kinda cool...
Not to post jack or anythign but i have 2 BRAND NEW 2.2 Ecotec motors. those who said they were in the cobalts were correct. I have some left over motors for gm crate motors and they were left over for the crates, but if anyone is interested pm me and i can give more info. They have the auto tranny connected to it.
hmmm, interesting, I might be in contact with you soon Vink
